A couple of years ago I begin knitting with this yarn, Quince & Co ‘Puffin’. It’s a very distinctive yarn, very chunky with a light twist so it almost feels close to knitting roving. It’s so fat and bouncy as you’re knitting it creates beautiful chunky well rounded stitches. As you can see this is just amazing in garter stitch, the stitches are almost sculptural! I loved this particular slip stitch herringbone pattern. I began working a sleeveless vest using the same combination of patterns. The back was in garter stitch and the front edges had the herringbone pattern. I didn’t like it though, it just didn’t lie quite right. So it sat unfinished for a year! But I loved the yarn and stitches too much not to use it.
This time around though I used it to much better effect. The herringbone pattern has got a very ‘drawing in’ effect. I wanted to use this effectively. By knitting the hat and gloves from side to side the herringbone can form the wrist and head bands to create a snug fit and the sculptural effect of the garter can be seen in it’s full glory. Due to the bulky nature of the yarn you’ll find that these knit up really, really fast. So good for those speedy gifts when you need them. The buttons are decorative to close the flat panel and don’t use buttonholes.
