It’s been a while since I’ve done a full knit-along so I’m really looking forward to this one. I’m doing it in conjunction with Briar Rose Fibers who are kindly giving me a discount code for all participants to use (code will be in the pre-sale information pack). The yarn I used for the cardigan is Sea Pearl, which is a beautiful mix of wool and tencel that gives it a great shine. The color I’m using for the design is a subtle grey with shades of pink/purple running through it that give it a lovely depth. It’s a fingering weight yarn so if you are substituting look for a similar weight yarn. This yarn comes in HUGE 218g hanks so for most of the sizes you’ll only need 2 hanks to complete it! Doesn’t get much better that that :-)

Briar Rose KALSo now a little bit about the cardigan; it’s top down with raglan shoulder shaping and there will be a few sleeve length options given. The front is a scalloped lace that’s knit from the side to allow for an elegant asymmetrical waterfall front. Watch my blog and make sure you’re signed up for the newsletter, I’ll have some more sneak peek shots of the full cardigan coming over the coming days. If you’re getting excited come join other knitters on my KAL ravelry board here.

There’s going to be a good range of sizes for the cardigan:

How does the KAL work?

Every two weeks I’ll send out a pdf with the next clue in the cardigan. Every clue will give tips, tutorials and potential alterations you might consider.  Best of all you can chat with other knitters that are working through the same clue as you which is great to stay motivated.

I’ve never done a KAL before, so please forgive me if this is a totally dumb question. Will Briar Rose Fibers website have enough of the Sea Pearl yarn for every member of the KAL? I’d like to order the yarn in Sea Pearl #102 or 104, but there are is only 1 skein of each available at this point in time.

Thank you for your patience and time in answering my question.

While Briar Rose Fibers has limited stocks as we don’t know the KAL numbers she is very accommodating and I’m certain she’ll do her best to help you out. I don’t think she’s got all the stock up on the website yet but I’m sure if you contact her she can let you know.

I’ve never done a KAL but love your designs so I think this would be a fun first. My question is, when do we order the yarn? You said there will be a discount code but if we wait for the first part of the instructions we won’t be able to cast on until the yarn comes in the mail. Thanks!

The pattern pre-order will be released later this evening and the first clue will be out at the start of June so you’ll have plenty of time to gather your yarn!

  5. Petra

Getting out of my comfort box, so I will join you all :) Looking forward to the next posts.

This will be my first KAL, but I thoroughly enjoyed your Craftsy classes Short Rows and Celtic Cables. You’re a great instructor and I’m looking forward to this project.

I have been knitting for over ten years, mostly shawls, cowls, lace, fingerless mitts, hats. I have not knit a sweater before and love this design. Would you say it is suitable as a beginning sweater project? Thanks, JoAnna

As you’ve got extensive knitting experience the only really challenge with a sweater is sizing. If you measure carefully and check your gauge you should have no problem. The ravelry forum is great for support as well!

  9. Lisa Davy

I am a little confused…we order the pattern now, so we could have it all knitted by June but we will miss out on clues? Or do we need these clues to knit the sweater so the pattern is incomplete without clues?

    Thanks for clarifying!

When you purchase the pattern it is a pre-order so you get an information sheet with sizing/yarn/gauge information. This allows you time to get your yarn and knit a swatch so you’re ready to start with the knitting of the first clue when it’s released in June.

I would love to order the pattern to do later . I love your patterns, your attention to detail, and how well you write them.

How much is the discount going to be on the yarn? This is a big factor for me when deciding whether or not I would like to participate in the KAL.

  13. carol Post author

The discount is for 10%. However you don’t have to use the suggested yarn, a lot of knitters are using stashed yarn or a locally sourced yarn.

  14. Karen

I’m concerned about there not being enough yarn for everyone. What if it sells out before the KAL? How can we be placed on a priority waiting list? Thank you in advance.

  15. Suzy

I’m intrigued by the yarn. Normally, I don’t knit with anything but animal fibers. The design looks so beautiful in that yarn that I’m interested in trying it.

Chris is regularly adding more Sea Pearl to her online store this week. You can check directly with her if you’re concerned.

  17. carol Post author

The color used we named 250, however Chris has been labeling yarn for the KAL as ‘Carol Feller KAL’ also.

    Hi Ya’all,
I have so many yarns that would work in my stash that must be used so I can’t buy the Sea pearl yarn even though I almost clicked on the purchase tab. So close.
I was thinking Handmaiden sea silk since I have 3 hanks but I don’t know if that would grow and grow. It is a gorgeous yarn and maybe I could do a smaller size so it can grow.
My other yarns I am still pondering over are
Pot Luck luxury sock yarn – merino / silk
    Sundara Sock yarn
    Any advice?
    Thanks

  19. carol Post author

Sea silk would be lovely! If you’re worried about it growing, knit a swatch and dry it vertically with a clothes peg hanging from it. This will give you an idea if it will grow vertically. My advice is always a few little swatches that will give you your answer. You’ll see what gets close to gauge and what fabric you like the feel of and drape.

  20. Robyn

    Thank you Carol,
I will try that. I really think the sea silk would be nice for this design.

  21. Sharyn Kann

    Hello Carol,
Love the look of this pattern. Before I buy it, I need to know if the lace detail is written out or only charted,

    thanks

    Sharyn
